OSU graduate wins fellowship for female veterans

Recent Oklahoma State University graduate Regina Campbell spent four influential days this summer learning alongside fellow female student veterans during the 2019 Focus Forward Fellowship in Indiana. The fellowship, a program offered by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University, helps female veterans with personal and professional development while working to improve their leadership skills and foster a community of support.

As the days gradually grow shorter and the heat quietly begins to retreat, more than just the end of summer is being signaled. Accompanying the end of the summer months comes the start of a new school year. Amidst the hustle and bustle of packing lunches and snacks for students, families sometimes lose sight of something that should be a priority in their household: food safety. The easiest way to promote food safety at home is through proper handling and storage, said Ravi Jadeja, food safety specialist for the Oklahoma State University Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center.

CAS offers professional development course on Motivational Interviewing

One example is the Department of Psychology’s course for those in helping professions including psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, physicians, nurses and more. This introductory course on Motivational Interviewing aims to define, describe, and distinguish M.I. along with the benefits of subsequent learning opportunities.

Coe discovers passion through research, campus organizations

1 is 2 Many, a White House initiative in response to the increased attention around sexual violence on college campuses, is one of Seraiah Coe’s philanthropic passions. She is deeply passionate about educating young adults on the definition of healthy relationships and believes this is an "important part of the recovery" from a personal experience. She presented her plan to her hometown high school principal in McKinney, Texas, and got approved to present the information to health class in the coming fall semester.

Bender hopes to incorporate philanthropy into career

Carly Bender calls “rEcess” — a monthly event for children with disabilities so their parents can have a free evening — her biggest hobby and favorite part of the month. The actuarial and financial mathematics senior recently earned a Women for OSU scholarship for her philanthropy and community service. She volunteered at Countryside Baptist Church in Stillwater and helped build communities of support for families with children who have special needs.

Healthier eating in a SNAP

Despite being referred to as the 2018 Farm Bill by most of the public, the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 dedicated a larger percentage of funding to nutritional assistance rather than farms themselves. Rodney Holcomb, agribusiness economist for Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center, and Aaron Ates, recent Ph.D. graduate from OSU, examined the spending habits of households currently being supported by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program administered by the Food Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Graham sees science and art in dentistry

Caroline Graham decided she wanted to be a researcher as a young girl. She was inspired by a National Geographic article about the study of microbes in the ice of Antarctica. The recent Oklahoma State University graduate is headed to the University of Oklahoma’s College of Dentistry. She completed an Honors College degree in May with a double major in microbiology/cell and molecular biology, and biochemistry, along with minors in chemistry and accounting. Among the many awards she earned were College of Arts and Sciences Top 10 Seniors and recognition among the OSU Alumni Association’s 15 Outstanding Seniors.
