OCEAN brings FOSSIL, experts and collaboration to OSU

Oklahoma State University created the Oklahoma Center for Evolutionary Analysis, or OCEAN, which hosts an annual conference called the Flyover State Scientists Integrating Evolution, or FOSSIL. OCEAN’s critical mass of social science researchers makes it one of fewer than five such centers in the entire U.S. where students receive training in and exposure to evolutionary approaches to cognition and behavior.

OSU faculty serve community through national STEM grant

Faculty members in the OSU College of Education, Health and Aviation and College of Arts and Sciences have been awarded an Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. Sheri Vasinda, associate professor of literacy education; Dr. Stephanie Hathcock, assistant professor of science education; and Dr. Rebecca Brienen, professor of art history, will receive $264,107 for their project, “One Community, Once Challenge: Pop-Up STEAM Studios.”

Students win awards at CAS Three Minute Thesis Finals

After 32 College of Arts and Sciences graduate students competed in the preliminary rounds and 13 advanced to the championship round, four impressed the judges enough to win awards during the college’s Three Minute Thesis Finals on Oct. 30. Ph.D. students Benjamin Nelson (Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics) and Erin Wood (Department of Psychology) tied for the win, with each receiving a $300 prize. Wood also earned an additional $300 as the People’s Choice Award winner. Sarah Elzay, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Integrative Biology, placed second and received $200. Meagan Bourne, a master’s student in the Department of Political Science, placed third to earn $100.

The ancient Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts is still famous thousands of years after its creation because of its timeless themes. The OSU Department of Theatre is putting those on display with a presentation of Argonautika: The Voyage of Jason and the Argonauts from Thursday through Sunday.

Oklahoma Higher Ed Hall of Fame honoring Jaco

Coming from a rural town in West Virginia and a family of miners and railroaders, William “Bus” Jaco never thought he would make it to college, much less have a doctorate degree, a theorem named in his honor and be inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society Hall of Fame. Jaco will receive the latter recognition Nov. 4.
