OSU physicists discover universal ‘Squeezing Phase Transition’ with implications for quantum technology

A team of physicists at Oklahoma State University led by assistant professor Dr. Thomas Bilitewski has identified universal behavior in the way quantum systems evolve, with potential applications in quantum enhanced sensors. The findings, which advance our understanding of entanglement or the quantum property famously described by Albert Einstein as “spooky action at a distance,” were published in the journal Physical Review Letters on September 11.

OSU wins bid to host International Physicists’ Tournament in 2026

Mon, Aug 18, 2025

For the first time in its history, the International Physicists’ Tournament will be hosted in the United States — at Oklahoma State University. In May 2026, around 200 faculty and students from 21 universities in Europe, South and Central America, Africa and Asia will come to Stillwater to compete in the “World Cup of undergraduate physics research,” said Dr. Flera Rizatdinova, head of the OSU Department of Physics.

Geology faculty, students set sail on NSF-funded research expedition to Labrador Sea

Fri, Aug 15, 2025

Two faculty members and two graduate students from Oklahoma State University’s Boone Pickens School of Geology recently returned from a 5-week international research expedition aboard the R/V Roger Revelle, a research vessel operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography. From June to July, the OSU team of Dr. Ashley Burkett, Dr. Natascha Riedinger, Amanda Harding and Monica Hinson joined 29 scientists from 12 institutions to collect sediment and seawater samples across the Labrador Sea. The expedition was part of a National Science Foundation-funded project “A Porewater Perspective on Benthic Sources of Neodymium to the North Atlantic” and focused on how seawater chemistry is both preserved in and influenced by seafloor sediments.

Physics microfabrication lab fuels research and discovery across OSU disciplines

Fri, Aug 01, 2025

The Department of Physics at Oklahoma State University recently added new equipment to its Cowboy Microfabrication Corral, which provides industry-grade tools and resources for faculty and students across OSU campus. Formally known as the Crystal Growth Lab — which had been around for decades — the Cowboy Microfabrication Corral needed a rebrand after receiving an “influx of new equipment that was not specific to crystal growth,” said OSU physics assistant professor Derrick Meyers. “The CMC is run by the physics department but is set up as a user facility for anyone to be able to utilize.”
