OSU economists update 2026 forecast as growth slows, Oklahoma faces energy headwinds

The economic outlook continues to be highly uncertain as progress in reducing inflation stalls and the labor market weakens, according to a new forecast report from the Center for Applied Economic Research (CAER) at Oklahoma State University.

Oklahomans are feeling widespread pain because of the nation’s economic shutdown in response to the coronavirus pandemic and a resulting glut in the demand for oil. Economic recovery in the state will be slow through this summer and into the winter, according to economists at Oklahoma State University, who predict that as many as 10,000 jobs could be lost in the energy sector alone.

An Oklahoma State University economist expects 2008 to bring slightly slower job growth for Oklahoma at 1.3% or 20,000 new jobs, compared to this year’s projected 1.5% (22,600 new jobs) growth rate.
