As breeding season approaches for many livestock species, the idea of leasing males arises. Importing genetics to improve a herd or flock and maintain hybrid vigor, without the purchase and maintenance of a male, is a very attractive idea, especially to smaller producers. On the surface, it can seem that leasing males is viable with little downside, but some real problems may occur.

Dr. Yoast Earns Dean Clarence McElroy Award

Gregory Yoast, DVM, was born in southern California and grew up in Cleveland, Oklahoma. In May during the class of 2021 commencement, Yoast was announced as the recipient of the coveted Dean Clarence H. McElroy Award, the highest honor an Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine student can achieve. The recipient is selected by the graduating class and fourth year instructors.

While all mammals are capable of being infected with rabies, it’s rare in very small mammals, like rats and squirrels. Raccoons, foxes, skunks and other wild animals are often the source of infection for livestock and other domestic animals. Dogs and cats often get it from fighting with wildlife, while horses, cattle and other livestock are likely to be bitten on the muzzle, udder or feet when encountering wildlife.

Oklahoma Veterinary Diagnostic Lab receives Donation from DetectaChem

The Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (OADDL) at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine recently received a $20,000 donation from DetectaChem. Based in Texas, DetectaChem is a privately held company and manufacturer of rapidly deployable, handheld, intelligent, and easy-to-operate detection systems. Specifically, OADDL worked with DetectaChem last year in the development of the company’s rapid COVID-19 test kit, which received emergency use authorization (EUA) by the FDA for COVID-19 testing in humans.
